The Economy
As a member of Congress, and through my current work with East County Rising and as a Gresham City Councilor, I will work toward a more inclusive economy that prioritizes people's needs, champions fairness, and creates an environment where everyone can prosper and contribute to our nation's success. To me, that means:
- Advocating for policies that create good-paying jobs with benefits. I firmly believe that every worker deserves prevailing wages to earn a fair and livable income, which not only lifts families out of poverty but also provides them with long run financial stability.
- Supporting businesses large and small. Oregon’s third Congressional District is attracting businesses and bringing good-paying jobs with quality benefits to our community. Still, 52% of employees here work for small businesses. As a small business owner myself, I know that with the right policies in place, we can support economic development at all levels while maintaining the unique character our local small businesses provide.
- Strengthening workers' rights by instituting paid family leave, affordable childcare, and helping unions and workers of all walks of life leverage collective bargaining rights. These initiatives strengthen individuals workers’ rights, promote equality, and create an environment where workers are respected, protected, and able to thrive.
- Investing in infrastructure and renewable energy initiatives. The 2023 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law ignited millions in spending in communities across the country on overdue projects to rebuild crumbling infrastructure. At the same time, it generated jobs, fostered economic growth, and invested in renewable energy sources for a more sustainable future. We must maximize these investments to harness their full potential for building a more inclusive economy.
- Make education more accessible and affordable. Too many people are weighed down by student loan debt, or have been unable to further their education due to costs. I will support avenues for tuition-free higher education and debt relief initiatives to remove barriers to learning and ensure that everyone has access to quality education, regardless of their tax bracket. Further, educational opportunities must better match our workforce needs. Apprenticeships and trade schools are in critical demand.
- Ensuring billionaires pay their fair share. We must reevaluate tax policies to ensure that the wealthiest individuals and corporations contribute their fair share. I will work to close tax loopholes, and redirect those funds to essential public services, accessible health care, and community development programs.
