Gun Violence
Gun violence is a uniquely American problem, and one that we can fix — we just need leaders in Washington to start prioritizing our lives over NRA donor contributions. It’s also one that is deeply personal to me. I mourn the loss of my two brothers and several close friends by committing to end the gun violence epidemic. I’ll proudly earn an ‘F’ rating from the NRA’s PAC and never accept a penny from them because I firmly believe in:
- Establishing universal background checks and Red Flag Laws, and closing the gun show loophole. It’s too easy to buy a gun in this country, and the repercussions of a gun in the wrong hands are devastating. We are overdue for comprehensive background checks for all gun sales — including private, online, and gun show transactions. Further, red flag laws will make it easier for us to keep guns out of the wrong hands by permitting courts to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who they believe may present a danger to others or themselves.
- Banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. There is no reason weapons of war should be on our streets.I will support legislation to ban the sale and possession of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, weapons that have been involved in numerous mass shootings.
- Promoting responsible gun ownership: I will promote safe storage laws to prevent unauthorized access to firearms, and support initiatives that encourage responsible gun ownership through education and awareness programs. I will support Extreme Risk Protection Orders, which allow concerned family members or law enforcement to seek court orders to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others.
- Funding research, intervention, and survivor support resources. We must research, fund, and expand community-based violence intervention programs aimed at addressing the root causes of gun violence and offering alternatives to at-risk individuals, as well as provide better resources for survivors of gun violence, including funding for victim services, trauma-informed care, and community programs.
