Labor
My political career started more than two decades ago as an organizer, when I helped organize a boycott for farm workers that were not getting fair wages. Labor is a cornerstone of my story and something that impacts most peoples’ daily lives. Strong labor movements can make a meaningful difference for workers, their families, and the companies they push to strive for more. At a minimum, I believe that every worker deserves respect, fair compensation –including a plan to allow workers to retire with dignity – safe working conditions, and a voice in their workplace. If elected to Congress, my priorities will be centered around supporting workers’ rights, including:
- Support for Unions: I will continue to advocate for legislation that protects workers' right to unionize, collective bargaining, and ensures fair labor practices and treatment of workers. I know firsthand that strong unions improve the lives of workers, keep us informed on our rights, and are essential to our participation in decision-making.
- Prevailing Wage: I will fight for a prevailing wage that allows every worker to support themselves and their families with dignity. For decades, the cost of living has increased with only marginal gains on workers' paychecks. We must raise the minimum wage and index it to inflation to ensure fair compensation for all workers.
- Paid Family Leave and Benefits: Work is best accomplished when we recognize the whole person doing the job — and that means better supporting their familial obligations. I know that paid family leave and other workplace benefits are life-changing practices that enable workers to care for their families without risking their livelihoods. Treating people with dignity and respect is always good business.
- Safe and Healthy Workplaces: I am committed to enforcing stringent workplace safety standards and combating discrimination and exploitation in all forms. No one should ever feel unsafe at work.
